Mt. Makalu Base Camp Trek is both teahouse and camping trek. At the lower reaches of trekking route, you will stay overnight at local teahouse – living like local – no modern amenities and facilities.

At higher reaches, you will hike and camp & camp and hike. Camping trek on Mt. Makalu Base Camp is truly inspiring – you will set up tents at the perfect location – open stars and clear views. The camping site usually lies nearby the village so that we can call for help whenever needed.

For this trek, you will accompanied by professional guide, porters and high altitude cook. A professional and experienced guide knows well how to supply local information and take personal care of each and every trekker.

Porters will carry your baggage and install the tents for you. The cook will prepare healthy and delicious meals for you.

Makalu Base Camp Trek Difficulty

The alpine elevation, isolation and remote geography of Makalu Base Camp Trek make it one of the hardest Himalayan trek in Nepal. Though it is extremely difficulty, you don’t need technical skills – previous trekking experience and good fitness is however required.

To reach the height of 4,870m, you will need to cope hazardous climatic zone, negotiate serious sloppy routes and extreme remote region where tourism infrastructures are nearly in null condition. Be prepared to win these challenges.

Another real threat of Makalu Base Camp Trek is altitude sickness. Always remember to walk slow and make sure to acclimatize your body after you gain couple of hundred meters.

Best Time to Trek Makalu Base Camp Trek

It is perfect to put on your boots and go for Makalu Base Camp Trek during pre- and post- monsoon period – in the months of March & May and September & November.

Spring (March – May) is season of greenery – the entire vegetation on the trekking route is groomed with blooming wild-flowers and wild life are in thriving state.  Autumn (September – November) is known for crystal clear view. There is very slim chance of getting views obstructed by black clouds.

Monsoon receive heavy downpour in Makalu region – which at a same time invites the threat of flood and landslide. Likewise winter is extremely cold in upper part of Makalu region which might be unfavorable for most of the trekkers.

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, our airport representative will meet you outside the airport terminal hall. Please look for your name on placard. He will greet you and transfer you to the pre-booked hotel on a private vehicle. Once in hotel, take your time to rest and refresh. In the evening, join welcome dinner hosted by The Mystic Mountain on typical Nepali restaurant with cultural shows.

After breakfast, you will start a guided tour to several historic and spiritual attraction of Kathmandu valley. Some of the landmark you will be visiting are en-listed on UNESCO world heritage site list. Today you will visit ancient Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath, the popular Swayambhunath (monkey temple), Boudhanath (largest stupa of Nepal) and Patan Durbar Square. After exploration, you will drive back to the hotel and make a pre-trip discussion where you can meet your trek leader and other trekking crew.

After breakfast, we will fly to Tumlingtar located on a high ground of northeast part of the country. At Tumlingtar, we will meet the rest of the crew who will help you carry your heavy stuffs. Next, we will drive to Chichira – a small Gurung village engulfed with lush fields and forest. We will halt here for overnight and make necessary preparation for next day’s trek.

After early morning breakfast, we will start our trek heading north towards Num. The walk will be moderate through beautiful settlements, forests and lush ridges. Num is nestled on a ridge line with open view on both sides.

After breakfast, we will drop down steadily through terraced farms and forest to the Barun River. Then we will cross the river and make steep ascend to the other side of the ridge. Now we will enter the Makalu Conservation Area where we will get our permits checked. After walking for a while, we will reach the village of Sedwa. We will camp right at the top of the village.

After breakfast, we will climb up to the ridge which lies in between the Ipsuwa Khola and Kasuwa Khola. Crossing the ridge through small villages and walking through paddy fields, we will finally reach the exciting village of Tashigaon. Tashigaon offers the dramatic view of Himalayas to its northern horizon.

Today is quite tough day as we will have to walk on a steep trail in high altitude. We will ascend through lush forest to the high stream and then higher up to the ridge. The trial onward is steeper and goes through Kharka and negotiates array of stone stairs before passing small lakes to reach the summit of the ridge. From the ridge, small descend takes you to Khongma Danda.

Today is scheduled as the rest day to help you acclimatize your body before crossing the Shipton La Pass the next day. We will spend our day exploring the nearby surrounding attractions and villages.

Today we will make to the summit of the Shipton La Pass which takes few hours of tiring climb. Then we will walk by the Lake Kalo Pokhari before climbing another pass of Keke La (4,170m). The summit of the pass offers the splendid view of Chamlang (7,321m), Peak 6 (6,524m) and Peak 7 (6,758m). After crossing the Kele La Pass, we will descend down through the stunning valley of Dobate.

After breakfast, we will walk through the rhododendron forest which takes us to the Barun River and the upper reaches of the valley. Be cautious at the initial part of the trek, as the trail is steep and slippery. Afterward, we will walk on a moderate pace gently gaining altitude until we reach Yangri Kharka located at the base of the valley.

After breakfast, we will make a pleasant walk through yak pasture, lush forest and rock fields. Though the walk is not challenging, the thin atmosphere might create short breathiness. On the way, we pass imposing ridges and Merek before climbing up to the Langmale Kharka.

Today is the day we have been desperately waiting for- we will make it to the base camp of Makalu. From Langmale Kharka, we will ascend to Shershong and then finally to the MBC. The trial is flat with icy glacier and moraines with beautiful view of Himalayas around. Mt. Makalu comes full into view as we approach the Shershong. The trail from Shershong to Makalu Base camp is probably the best part of entire trail as the Himalayas are so close almost in touching distance.

The beauty of this rocky barren Base Camp is glorified by the large Barun Glacier and imposing Himalayas. From BC, we can witness the magnificent south face of Makalu and astonishing panorama of Everest and Lhotse. After breakfast, we will ascend steeply to Mumbuk through the dense forest of firs and rhododendron. Then we will cross the high pass of Keke La and Shipton before descending gradually to the Khongma Danda.

We will retrace our step back to Tumlingtar via same route we have used previously. From Chichira, we can savor the marvelous view of Mt. Makalu which we have seen up-close few days ago. The final return journey will take us to Tumlingtar for overnight stay.

After early morning breakfast, we will fly back to Kathmandu and then drive back to the hotel to take a well-deserved rest.
