The alpine elevation, isolation and remote geography of Makalu Base Camp Trek make it one of the hardest Himalayan trek in Nepal. Though it is extremely difficulty, you don’t need technical skills – previous trekking experience and good fitness is however required.

Spring (March – May) is season of greenery – the entire vegetation on the trekking route is groomed with blooming wild-flowers and wild life are in thriving state. Autumn (September – November) is known for crystal clear view. There is very slim chance of getting views obstructed by black clouds.
Monsoon receive heavy downpour in Makalu region – which at a same time invites the threat of flood and landslide. Likewise winter is extremely cold in upper part of Makalu region which might be unfavorable for most of the trekkers.

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, our airport representative will meet you outside the airport terminal hall. Please look for your name on placard. He will greet you and transfer you to the pre-booked hotel on a private vehicle. Once in hotel, take your time to rest and refresh. In the evening, join welcome dinner hosted by The Mystic Mountain on typical Nepali restaurant with cultural shows.

After breakfast, you will start a guided tour to several historic and spiritual attraction of Kathmandu valley. Some of the landmark you will be visiting are en-listed on UNESCO world heritage site list. Today you will visit ancient Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath, the popular Swayambhunath (monkey temple), Boudhanath (largest stupa of Nepal) and Patan Durbar Square. After exploration, you will drive back to the hotel and make a pre-trip discussion where you can meet your trek leader and other trekking crew.

After breakfast, we will fly to Tumlingtar located on a high ground of northeast part of the country. At Tumlingtar, we will meet the rest of the crew who will help you carry your heavy stuffs. Next, we will drive to Chichira – a small Gurung village engulfed with lush fields and forest. We will halt here for overnight and make necessary preparation for next day’s trek.

After early morning breakfast, we will start our trek heading north towards Num. The walk will be moderate through beautiful settlements, forests and lush ridges. Num is nestled on a ridge line with open view on both sides.

After breakfast, we will drop down steadily through terraced farms and forest to the Barun River. Then we will cross the river and make steep ascend to the other side of the ridge. Now we will enter the Makalu Conservation Area where we will get our permits checked. After walking for a while, we will reach the village of Sedwa. We will camp right at the top of the village.

After breakfast, we will climb up to the ridge which lies in between the Ipsuwa Khola and Kasuwa Khola. Crossing the ridge through small villages and walking through paddy fields, we will finally reach the exciting village of Tashigaon. Tashigaon offers the dramatic view of Himalayas to its northern horizon.

Today is quite tough day as we will have to walk on a steep trail in high altitude. We will ascend through lush forest to the high stream and then higher up to the ridge. The trial onward is steeper and goes through Kharka and negotiates array of stone stairs before passing small lakes to reach the summit of the ridge. From the ridge, small descend takes you to Khongma Danda.

Today is scheduled as the rest day to help you acclimatize your body before crossing the Shipton La Pass the next day. We will spend our day exploring the nearby surrounding attractions and villages.
