The Upper
Dolpo Trek between the Dhaulagiri Mountains and the Tibetan Plateau is located
in Nepal's Dolpa district, one of the difficult and adventurous yet exciting trekking
routes in Nepal's rough and remote west area. Dolpa is the largest district
among 77 other districts in Nepal which borders Tibet on the north and
northeast.The majority of population are generally the adherents of Bon
religion, reflecting the modern form of school of Buddhism. The lack of tourism
facilities and the sediment geographical structure makes the upper Dolpo trek
scarcely traveled and considered to be a restricted area requiring a special
permit.
The journey
to Upper Dolpa starts with the arrival at Juphal airport from Nepalgunj after a
day's visit to UNESCO heritage sites in Kathmandu. Juphal Airport is the only
airport that serves the citizens of the Dolpa district and connects to the
Shey-Phoksundo National Park as well as the Upper Dolpo.Dolpa's varying weather
conditions make flight services unpredictable which sometimes delay flights.
The Dolpo
area ranges from 1,525 to 7,751 m with some of the passes that are moderately
challenging to intense. The Dolpo area is hard to match for its pristine beauty
and rugged charm, where one can still have the opportunity to encounter the
nomadic people and their almost untouched and unexplored lifestyle.Some of the
difficult passes along the trekking route might scare you but the mountainous
landscape with steep cliffs, lush tropical forest, deep river canyons and
historic monasteries along the route are worth the trouble.

The inner
dolpo circuit/upper dolpo trek will allow you to explore the amazing view of
the deepest lake in Nepal “psheyphoksundo” along with sheyphoksundo national
park which is famous for its crystal clear water and turquoise colour as we
traverse through several high passes and majestic mountains. Though Dolpo is a
dry, barren place in general, it is riddled with fast-flowing rivers, crashing
waterfalls, deep river gorges, lush meadows and tilled field valleys. Certain
attractions in this area are remote villages with diverse cultures like the
religion of Bon Po, and of course the stunning frozen waters of Phoksundo Lake.
With its natural beauty and rugged charm the Dolpo area is hard to match.
