Mera peak climbing at the elevation of 6,476m in
the lower Khumbu region of Nepal is a classified trekking peak declared by the
Nepal Mountaineering Association. The peak contains three main summits: Mera
North 6476m, Mera Central 6,461m, and Mera South 6,065m. It is the highest
trekking peak among several other peaks in Nepal.
Mera Peak Climbing is adventurous and less
challenging with little mountaineering experience. Most of the trip is hiking
through the villages of Hinku valley. The trekking demands less technical
experience rather than physical fitness and acclimatization with the high
altitude. Therefore, it is a perfect trekking route for beginners to begin
their climbing and mountaineering experience.
Mera peak offers the magnificent panoramic
summit views of five of the six world’s tallest mountains: Mt. Everest 8848m,
Mt. Lhotse 8516m, Mt. Cho Oyu 8201m, Mt. Makalu 8463m, and Mt. Kanchenjunga
8586m. The trekking route itself is the exploration of the lush green
subtropical forest filled with rhododendron, pines, and oak trees surrounded by
the giant Himalayan peaks.
The trip to Mera peak kicks off with a scenic
mountain flight to Lukla Airport from Tribhuvan International Airport. We will
meet our trekking experts and staff and continue our journey through remote and
beautiful Hinku Valley. The terraced fields, running streams, and dense forest
in this area of Everest region is home to the Sherpa and Tibetan culture.
Best time to Travel:
Mera peak is technically less challenging to
climb, however, because of the higher altitude, the weather can be tough if not
traveled in the best season. The best season for climbing the Mera peak is
spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the wind is low and
rain is zero. Mera Peak Climbing will be technically more difficult in the
winter season unless you wish to do so. Mera Peak Climbing in Nepal is all-time
popular among beginner climbers as you can witness panoramic views of a hundred
plus snow-capped peaks, during the clear weather.
On your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our staff representative from Mystic Mountain Treks will be waiting at the terminal hall to receive you and transfer to the hotel helping you with all the check-in process. After relaxing for a while you can roam around the local market on your own as there are no activities scheduled for today. In the evening, our staff member will brief you about the trek while having a welcome dinner organized by the company. Enjoy your overnight stay at the hotel in Kathmandu.
There are many places to visit in Kathmandu listed in the National Heritage sites. You can visit some of them as it is impossible to visit every one of them. In the afternoon, our climbing team will be there to meet you at the hotel. Our climbing guide will check all the gears you brought and take you to a gear rental shop in case you need additional trekking/climbing gears. In the evening you can pack your bags and make yourself ready for the next day.
On this day we will take an early morning 35-40 minutes flight from Tribhuvan International Airport to the Lukla Airport enjoying the amazing scenery of the Himalaya ranges. Our climbing guides will be with you during the journey to Lukla on the plane also. Landing at Lukla, we will meet our porters and distribute the luggage among them, and start to walk towards the east crossing through a thick forest along the way to Chhuthang. Make sure to stick with the guides as the trail can be confusing and misleading from the main path.
Our destination for today is Thuli Kharka. As we leave Chhutang, we will ascend following the trail that steepens while crossing the Zatrawala pass. You can enjoy the magnificent views of Number Himal, Kongde Ri, Karyolang peak, and other surrounding peaks from the top of the pass. After crossing the pass, we will descend all the way to stay overnight at Thuli Kharka.
We will continue our trek following the uphill and downhill along the path crossing through dense forest filled with oak, rhododendron, pine, and juniper trees. The whole trek to Kothe is surrounded by the beauty of Himalayan ranges. After descending steeply to the Hinku river we will make our final climb to reach Kothe. It is a comparatively short trek which will provide us ample time for acclimatization also.
This day we will walk to Thangnak which is considered a summer grazing area. We will ascend gradually following the Hinku River surrounded by the giant mountain peaks. Passing through Gondhi-Sung, a summer herder’s settlement, you can see an ancient monastery here. The path ahead is considerably comfortable until we reach Thangnak where there are several good tea houses.
From Thangnak to Khare, we follow the lateral moraine of Dig Glacier to the grassy Dig Kharka, which offers magnificent views of the Northern face of Mera Peak. The trail leads through the moraines of Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers ahead and a steep climb will finally get you to Khare. From the viewpoint in Khare, you can see the view of the route to Mera Peak which we will take later.
Today we will spend our entire day preparing for the summit of Mera peak. It is important to acclimatize yourself before you climb above the 5000meter altitude to avoid any sort of physical and mental illness. Our expert guides will make all the necessary checks of gears for the climb including ropes, axes, crampons, harness, and other necessary equipment before heading further towards the peak. In your free time, you can explore around Khare village.
The next day we will head out towards the Mera Base Camp which will be a short trek but technically challenging one. We will gradually ascend over Mera glacier and climbing steeply towards the top of the glacier we will eventually reach Mera Base Camp. We will set up our camp and call it a day and continue to make the necessary preparation for tomorrow.
Today we will head towards the High Camp making the steep ascent through Mera la Pass and continue climbing along the rocky and snow-covered trail towards the High Camp. You can enjoy the glorious views of Mt. Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, and the south face of Lhotse, Nuptse, Baruntse, and Chamlang from the high camp. We will set our camp here for the night and make the necessary preparation for the next day.
We will start our climb to the peak very early in the morning to avoid strong winds at midday and return before it gets dark and extremely cold. We will have an alpine start and putting on crampons and using rope we will climb to the summit. We may have to cross several crevasses along the way to the summit. Once you reach the summit you can enjoy the striking and stunning views of Cho Oyu 8201m, Lhotse 8516 m, Everest 8848, Makalu 8463m, Kanchenjunga 8586m as well as Nuptse 7855m and Chamlang 7319. After a couple of hours, we will head back towards Khare for our overnight stay.
At the high altitude, the weather can get really bad which can make the summit unsuccessful. In the worst-case scenario, the altitude sickness at such a high altitude can halt the trek. The extra day on the trek provides certain flexibility for the attempt to the summit.
After a successful summit to the peak, it is now time to head back. We will retrace our trails descending downhill and trekking through Thangnak we will head out to Kothe. We will leave high altitude passing through the Hinku Valley to Kothe crossing a dense sub-tropical forest along the way.
We will climb uphill through the lush rhododendron forest on the west side of the Hinku Valley to Thulikharka. You can observe the wide range of peaks; Mera North, Mera Central, and Mera South from Thuli Kharka.
We will begin the last day of our trekking ascending towards the Zatrawala Pass, from where we will descend gently towards Lukla. We will stay at Lukla for the rest of the day exploring the local places and celebrate the journey.
The next morning we will take an early morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu. Once arrived you will be transferred to your hotel and you can spend the rest of the day as per your wishes. In the evening, you can visit Thamel for nice food and drinks.
Today is the last day of your stay in Kathmandu. So make sure you use this extra day visiting around Kathmandu and shopping. You can do your packing for tomorrow and we will see you at the dinner in the evening.
Today is the final day of your journey to Mera Peak climbing. Our airport representative will escort you to Tribhuvan International Airport as per your flight schedule. It was a memorable and adventurous journey with you. See you again. Farewell!!!
